Qualifications, occupations and interests
Lawyer (solicitor). In 1819 he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn and seven years later had an office at Grey's Inn. However he was still dependent on his father, who appealed to Sir George Murray to help his son with a colonial posting or some travelling tutorship. In 1826 he was nominated for the post of Attorney General of New South Wales at an annual salary of £1,400.

Son (second son and youngest of seven children) of the Reverend Colin Baxter (d. 1835) and his wife Jacobina McDuff.
