Qualifications, occupations and interests
Lawyer (barrister). Trained in Dublin, Ireland; admitted to the New South Wales Bar in 1839. Appointed Chairman of the Court of Quarter Sessions in Melbourne, Port Phillip District, at its establishment in May 1839. On the Bench of Magistrates, Melbourne, in 1841. Lived in Strathmore, then outside Melbourne, where he was one of the first to buy land in the Crown land sales of 1845; he soon sold the land for a large profit. Owned land in Moonee Moonee Ponds. Laid the first stone of the first bridge to cross the Yarra River. Ordained as a Church of England clergyman in 1853.
