BUILDING INDUSTRY ABORIGINAL TRAINING AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES

The Hon. JAN BURNSWOODS
[9.38 p.m.]: On 23 April I had the great pleasure of helping to hand out certificates in a course run by the construction carpentry division of Lidcombe College of TAFE as part of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands Job Ready course. I have spoken before in the House about this course and paid tribute to those involved, including Lidcombe TAFE, the Minister for Education and Training, the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union [CFMEU], and the various companies that have helped to make this course such a success and ensured that the young Aboriginal men who graduate from it find jobs. The course has had a very good record not only of ensuring that work is available but also of job retention.
Certificates were presented on the day to Ashley Bell, Rodney Bell, Roy Bell, Billy Jac Connelly, Leroy Davis, Robert Haines, Charles Hookey, Geoffrey Lowe, Desmond Madden, Stephen Robinson, Shayne Ryan, Mark Smith, Michael Smith, Darrell Trindall, Deacon Tompkins and Dthane Williamson. I congratulate all recipients on their achievements. I must also mention that this most successful program is the second of its kind. It is particularly important because most of the young Aboriginal men who have participated in the program came from the Redfern-Waterloo area. The CFMEU has played a major role in recruiting those young men. I pay particular tribute to Les Tobler for his efforts in that regard. Ron Wright, the Director of Lidcombe College, also deserves much of the praise for this very successful course, as do the teachers who run it. The number of graduates from the course is relatively small at this stage but it is making a real difference for young men aged mostly about 17. The course is a very important step forward and I congratulate all those involved with it.
Motion agreed to.
The House adjourned at 9.40 p.m. until Wednesday 5 May 2004 at 11.00 a.m.
