    2 ASSENT TO BILLS

    The President reported a Message from His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor intimating Assent to the following Bill:

    3 SUSPENSION OF STANDING ORDERS—TEMPORARY CHAIRMEN OF COMMITTEES

    Mr Egan sought the leave of the House to move a motion to suspend so much of the Standing Orders as would allow the appointment of an additional two Temporary Chairmen of Committees.

    No objection taken.

    Leave granted.

    Mr Egan moved, by leave and as a matter of necessity and without previous notice: That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would preclude the nomination of an additional two Members to act as Temporary Chairmen of Committees during the present Session.

    4 STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT—NOMINATION OF CHAIRMEN AND DEPUTY CHAIRMEN OF STANDING COMMITTEES

    The President informed the House on Thursday 25 May 1995 that the Leader of the Government had nominated the following Members as Chairmen of Legislative Council Standing Committees:
      Law and Justice : Mr Vaughan
      Social Issues : Mrs Symonds
      State Development : Ms Staunton.

    The President further informed the House that the Leader of the Opposition on the same day had nominated the following Members as Deputy Chairmen:
      Law and Justice : Mrs Sham-Ho
      Social Issues : Dr Goldsmith
      State Development : Dr Pezzutti.

    7 PETITIONS

    Marijuana

    Mrs Nile presented a petition from 125 citizens of New South Wales expressing concern about legal changes which could increase or encourage the distribution or availability of soft drugs such as marijuana, and praying that the House take no measures that could extend the social problem of drug use and oblige those who are promoting marijuana or similar drugs to prove without doubt that such drugs are harmless before any legislation or decriminalisation of use is introduced.

    18 TEMPORARY CHAIRMEN OF COMMITTEES

    According to the Standing Order and the Resolutions of the House in that behalf the President nominated the Honourable Jennifer Ann Gardiner, the Honourable Marlene Mary Herbert Goldsmith, the Honourable John Richard Johnson, the Honourable Elisabeth Kirkby, the Reverend the Honourable Frederick John Nile, the Honourable Helen Wai-Har Sham-Ho, and the Honourable Elizabeth Ann Symonds to act as Temporary Chairmen of Committees during the present Session of Parliament.


    19 JOINT STANDING COMMITTEE UPON ROAD SAFETY

    On the Order of the Day being read Mr Egan moved:

    1. That this House agrees to the resolution contained in the Legislative Assembly’s Message of 25 May 1995 relating to the appointment of a Joint Standing Committee to inquire into and report on road safety in New South Wales.

    2. That the representatives of the Legislative Council on the Joint Standing Committee be Mr Jobling, Mr Manson and Mr Tingle, and that Tuesday, 30 May 1995 at 7.30 p.m. in Room No. 1136 be the time and place for the first meeting.

    Mr Egan then moved: That the following Message be forwarded to the Legislative Assembly.

    The Legislative Council desires to inform the Legislative Assembly that it has this day agreed to the following resolution:
