2 PRECEDENCE OF BUSINESS (Formal Business)

      Mr Pickering moved, pursuant to Notice: That so much of the Standing and Sessional Orders be suspended as would preclude Government Business taking precedence of General Business after 4.15 p.m. on Thursday 19 March 1992.

3 PETITIONS

      Forestry Commission

      Mr Jones presented a petition from 111 citizens of New South Wales expressing their wish that the Forestry Commission of New South Wales be reformed in accordance with the recommendations of the Public Accounts Committee, and praying that the House urge the Government to act immediately for the good of our environmental heritage and the health of the plantation timber industry.

      Petition received.

      Public Health

      Mrs Symonds presented a petition from 37 citizens of New South Wales expressing concern at the impact of current policies on the provision of adequate and affordable health services for the people of New South Wales, and praying that the House resist all moves to implement productivity savings in the public health system and to close hospitals and downgrade services without consultation with both the community and interested bodies.

      Petition received.

      Domestic Cats

      Mr Jones presented a petition from 34 citizens of New South Wales expressing concern over the thousands of domestic cats left to starve, suffer injury and disease through lack of attention or unnecessarily destroyed because of unrestricted breeding practices, and praying that the House enact legislation providing for the compulsory desexing of domestic cats other than those specified by registered breeders.

      Mrs Evans moved, pursuant to Notice: That the following important matter of public interest should be discussed forthwith:

      The increase in abuse of the elderly.

      Debate ensued.

      Question: That the matter of public interest be discussed forthwith___put and passed.

      Discussion of matter ensued and concluded.

6 ORDER POSTPONED

      Order of the Day No. 1 on the Notice Paper of Government Business postponed, on motion of Mr Hannaford, until a later hour of the sitting.

      Order of the Day read for resumption of the adjourned debate of the question on the motion of Mr Pickering: That this House take note of the legislative program of the Government for the Second Session of the Fiftieth Parliament.

      The Deputy President (Mrs Arena) left the Chair and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole for consideration of this Bill.

      The Temporary Chairman (Mrs Evans) reported the Bill with amendments.

      The House adopted the Report.

      Ordered: That the third reading stand an Order of the Day for next sitting day.
