1996 Precedent1. Member spoke in reply and then sought to adjourn the debate. Acting Speaker ruled that the matter could not be adjourned. By agreement the putting of the question deferred to a later hour. PD 2/5/96, 741
1994 Precedent1. Motion for urgent consideration moved by the Leader of the Opposition. Amendment moved to the motion by the Premier. When speaking in reply, the Leader of the Opposition indicated that he would seek leave to change the date mentioned in the motion. Point of order taken that, because the Leader of the Opposition had closed the debate, there would not be an opportunity for another member to move the amendment. The Speaker indicated that if the Government amendment was carried, then it was immaterial what happened to the original motion. If it were lost, then the Leader of the Opposition could seek leave to amend his motion and adjust the date. The Government amendment was subsequently negatived and leave was not granted to amend the original motion. The numbers being equal on the original question 'that the motion be agreed to', the Speaker cast his vote with the noes and declared the question to have been passed in the negative. 1993 PrecedentPoint of order taken when member questioned whether Minister was speaking in reply to debate. The Speaker replied that he was not closing off debate but was speaking to the first amendment. PD 24/2/93, 16
