KINGS CROSS INJECTING ROOM

Dr ANDREW McDONALD: My question is to the Premier. Will the Premier guarantee the continued operation of the Sydney medically supervised injecting centre during his term in government?

Mr BARRY O'FARRELL: We have no plans to close the medically supervised injecting centre, but what I have said repeatedly, and what even a great reporter at the Sydney Morning Herald, David Marr, understands, is that if that legislation ever comes into this place or the other place it will be subject to a conscience vote. The answer is I do not have a plan. Do I know if anyone else has a plan? No.

Mr John Robertson: What about Fred? Fred has one.

Mr BARRY O'FARRELL: Thank you for the interjection. Has Reverend the Hon. Fred Nile raised the issue with me? No. I am sorry to disappoint the member for Macquarie Fields. His face certainly fell when he got that response. But the face that was looking particularly upbeat on Tuesday night was the face of the member for Toongabbie, former 41 over there. Former 41 was in the sort of form that we have never seen before. He was entertaining journalists in the staff bar. Three-quarters of the press gallery were there and he was working hard. I am sure it is only coincidence that the next day I heard that the Leader of the Opposition had been rolled on the pre-commitment order.

Mr Nathan Rees: Point of order: For the edification of the leader, I absented myself from the Cabinet discussion on that matter because I am a patron of a club.

The SPEAKER: Order! That is not a point of order. The Premier has the call.

Mr BARRY O'FARRELL: And how best to avoid any responsibility for the leak. I hear the leak was from the Leader of the Opposition, but I will come back to that on another occasion. We are delighted to see this revitalisation of the member for Toongabbie, the creation of a member for Toongabbie with a pleasant personality for the first time since he has been in this place, someone who is a joy to share a lift with for the amount of information he is prepared to share, far happier and far friendlier than the member for Canterbury, for instance. He clearly has a goal but I remind him that no matter how many opportunities he takes to befriend the gallery, whether it be the Sydney Morning Herald or the other end of the gallery, the fact is they do not get a vote. So, keep working on the member for Keira, keep working on the member for Wollongong, keep working on the member for Mt Druitt. He has one; he has only 10 more to go before he has a majority.

Mr Nathan Rees: How is Manly going?

Mr BARRY O'FARRELL: The Tigers beat them comprehensively last time around as I am sure they will beat St George this evening. The most remarkable transformation in the member for Toongabbie was what one of my staff spied on the street, which was that he approached in a good-humoured way, in a friendly way, that former general secretary, that former senator, that former Federal Minister, Graham Richardson.

Dr Andrew McDonald: Point of order: My point of order is under Standing Order 129. The question was about the medically supervised injecting centre. The Premier has not returned to that for some minutes. I ask that you get him to return to the leave of the question.

The SPEAKER: Order! The Premier answered that question. If the member would like him to embellish his answer I will ask him to return to it.

Mr BARRY O'FARRELL: I was obviously too indirectly trying to work out what has caused the change of personality in the member for Toongabbie. This is not the member we knew in the previous Parliament. It is a much happier version. He is sitting there smiling. I have answered the member for Macquarie Fields' question. I do not know who gave him that question but it was another dud and we have seen too many duds from that side this week.
