Deepavali, 'The Festival of Lights' - November 2011

This year, Deepavali, ‘The Festival of Lights’, celebration at New South Wales Parliament House has been organised by the New South Wales Government in acknowledgment of the importance of this festival and in recognition of the contributions made by Australians of Indian and sub-continent heritages to the ongoing success, and vibrancy, of our State’s multicultural society.

As part of these celebrations, the Deepavali lights will illuminate the exterior of Parliament House for three weeks until Friday 18 November 2011.

Deepavali marks the end of the harvest season in most of India, when farmers give thanks for the bounty of the year gone by, and pray for a good harvest for the year to come. It is often referred to as the festival of lights as this religious occasion may see small lamps lit to signify the triumph of goodness over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.
