In this inquiry, the Committee was required to consider public comments made by the Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, concerning possible ‘consequences’ for members in supporting the Human Cloning and Other Prohibited Practices Amendment Bill 2007, and to determine whether or not those comments constituted a contempt of Parliament. Any attempt to threaten or intimidate a member in relation to their parliamentary duties, or improperly to influence a member in relation to those duties, may amount to a contempt.
Recommendation:
That, as no contempt has been found, no further action be taken in relation to the public comments made by Cardinal Pell concerning ‘consequences’ for members who supported the Human Cloning and Other Prohibited Practices Amendment Bill 2007.
